Should a Man Color or Bleach Their Beard?
Share
Have you been considering changing the color of your beard lately? There are plenty of reasons why a man may wish to color his beard, and all of them are certainly valid. However, before you do, there are some important things that you should know. This article is going to help you determine whether or not you should color your beard, while giving you some helpful tips so that you go about it in a way that most benefits your facial hair health.
Going Gray
One of the most common reasons for coloring one’s beard is the development of gray hairs that come with age. As we get older, our hair loses its pigment which is why those gray hairs appear. If a man is dyeing the hair on his head, it’s very likely that he’ll be coloring the hair on his face as well for a natural consistency.
Hair and Beard are Two Different Colors
Some men may choose to dye their beards because their facial hair doesn’t match the hair on their head. This happens more frequently than you might realize. For instance, it’s not unusual for a man who has blonde hair to have a vibrant red beard.
Personal Style
Some men like to color their beard because they simply prefer a different color.
Is it Okay to Bleach or Color Your Beard?
The answer is a bit complicated. As you may know, any type of coloring product is going to do some form of damage to your beard hair, even if it’s mild. Our beards are very sensitive in that the strands are more prone to damage than the hair that’s on our head. This means that dyeing your beard regularly can lead to split ends and dehydrated strands.
This is especially the case with bleaching. Bleach is the harshest coloring product out there and bleaching your beard regularly can actually lead to your facial hair falling out.
Still, if you really want to color your beard, there are some ways that you can go about it in order to experience as little damage to your facial hair as possible:
Which Coloring Product You Use Makes a Difference
Before you run to the drug store and grab any old bottle of beard dye, make sure that you do some research first. Different coloring ingredients affect your beard in different ways, with some ingredients being significantly harsher than others. Try to go with the gentlest coloring product possible. Or, even better, go to a salon that has an experienced hair colorist, who will know how to color your beard in a way that mitigates any damage.
Moisture is Essential
Because hair dye can be quite drying, it’s important to compensate with lots of moisture. We recommend using a nourishing, highly moisturizing beard oil twice each day if you’re coloring your beard. Beard oil will coat each strand so that it’s protected from anything that can deplete it of hydration.
Choose Your Cleanser Wisely
Be careful when cleansing your beard, as certain ingredients used in popular products are so harsh that they can strip the color away. Choose a cleanser that’s gentle and that consists of plant-based ingredients, rather than aggressive sulfates.
Be Prepared to Repeat the Process Regularly
Remember that once you commit to coloring your beard, you’ll have to keep up regularly or else the color will either fade or grow out, neither of which is a good look. Stay on top of your coloring schedule so that that old color doesn’t start poking through.
If You Wanna Do It, Go for It, But…
Coloring or bleaching your beard probably isn’t the best thing for your facial hair’s overall health, but you can still pull it off as long as you take certain measures to boost your beard care routine. So, before you start dyeing it, invest in the right products that can combat any damage. And, make sure that you choose your coloring product carefully.

Not worried about the “health” of my beard, as it will be removed January. Looking to turn my 10cm skunk (dark brown sides, white center strip) into a full santa beard. A hair colouring is 140$ at some salons, not sure what a beard would go for?
Any suggestions appreciated,
Thanks,
Dustin
